Born in Havana in 1934, Jorge Camacho devoted himself to painting as a self-taught artist during the 1950s. A journey to Mexico deepened his interest in pre-Columbian civilisations. After settling in Paris, he met André Breton and joined the Surrealist milieu. From 1975 he divided his working life between Paris and Andalusia; he died in 2011.
A painter, lithographer and poet, Camacho developed an unsettling world in which eroticism, alchemy and shamanism intersect. His interests in ornithology, photography, jazz and Andalusian music accompanied this exploration. Writing also occupied an important place in his practice: he illustrated works by Joyce Mansour and Fernando Arrabal and translated Haitian poetry. His images thus sustained an ongoing dialogue between pictorial invention and the possibilities of poetic imagination.
This profile brings together identity references for Jorge Camacho and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
