Léon Bonnat

Born : 1833Died : 1922Documented citizenships : France

Léon Bonnat (1833–1922), born in Bayonne, discovered Spanish painting at the Prado during his adolescence in Madrid. He studied with the Madrazos and later in Léon Cogniet’s Paris studio. Supported financially by his native city, he stayed in Rome from 1858 to 1861. His early works include religious subjects and scenes inspired by Italian life.

Portraiture subsequently assumed a major role: he depicted Adolphe Thiers and Victor Hugo, among many figures from social and cultural elites. His pupils included artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Thomas Eakins, and he directed the École des beaux-arts from 1905. Also a collector, Bonnat assembled paintings, drawings and sculptures. His donations and bequest made an essential contribution to the collections preserved in Bayonne.

This profile brings together identity references for Léon Bonnat and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
