Pieter van Bloemen (1657–1720), a painter born and deceased in Antwerp, is chiefly associated with Italianate landscapes, animals—especially horses—and genre scenes; he is also known by the nicknames Standaart and Stendardo. The elder brother of Jan Frans and Norbert van Bloemen, he trained with Simon Johannes van Douw and became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1674. In 1684, he was in Lyon with the painters Adriaen van der Kabel and Gillis Weenix. In Rome, he joined the Bentvueghels, a group of Flemish artists based in the city, and later travelled to Naples, Sicily and Malta. He returned to Antwerp in 1694 and was appointed director of the Academy in 1699; he also passed on his knowledge to his two brothers, as well as to Peeter van Aken and Frans van Alter.
Works held in several European collections provide examples of his subjects: The Caravan, dated 1704, is in the Museo del Prado, while Landscape with Shepherds and Animals in Front of the Baths of Diocletian is dated circa 1700 and held at the Scottish National Gallery. Two paintings from 1716 at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Riding School in Front of a Park and Riding School in Front of Ancient Ruins, also place the horse at the forefront of their titles. Other titles document the variety of scenes depicted: Camp Scene with a Woman Breastfeeding a Baby, dated to the 1690s, is held at the National Museum in Warsaw; Soldiers Settled in a Village, from 1697, is listed by York Museums Trust. The Farrier (1706) belongs to the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, Combat between Horsemen (1709) to the National Gallery in Oslo, and The Halt, dated circa 1694, to the Worcester Art Museum.
