Johann Christian Klengel (1751–1824) was a landscape painter and draughtsman associated with Dresden, where he studied with Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich. Landscape with Resting Shepherds and Herd, dated 1775 in Chemnitz, demonstrates the study of older, particularly Dutch, models in constructing a southern landscape. Black pen over black chalk organizes the figures and the different elements of the setting.
In Evening Landscape with a Wood Gatherer, also in Chemnitz, opaque colours lead the eye from brown through green to blue. This sensitivity to light anticipates a Romantic understanding of landscape. A sheet in the Metropolitan Museum combines a partial view of the Colosseum on the front with a sketch of the Temple of Minerva Medica on the reverse. Observation of monuments thus complements his repertoire of rural scenes.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Christian Klengel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
