As a painter, ceramicist, sculptor and printmaker, James Coignard developed a practice spanning several disciplines, with collage and paper materials recurring throughout his work. Born in Tours on 25 September 1925, he turned to art after an initial experience in the French administration. At the age of 23, his discovery of the landscapes of the Côte d’Azur led him to undertake studies at the Arts décoratifs de Nice; in 1948, he decided to become an artist and attended evening classes at the school.
His meeting with the gallerist and publisher Paul Hervieu in 1950 led to a collaboration with the Galerie Paul Hervieu in Nice, which helped make him known in artistic circles, particularly in Scandinavia. Early in his career, critics associated him with the École de Paris; his painting and ceramics subsequently diverged from those of his colleagues. His travels took him to Sweden and the United States, among other places, where he lived for a few years.
In 1978, he took part in the creation of the Pasnic printmaking studio, with which he began a long collaboration. In his work, collage recurs alongside torn-out pages and wrapping paper. These elements are layered, with symbols and numbers placed on top. One source reports that he exhibited in many countries.
