Born in Shanghai in 1935, Hsiao Chin, also transcribed as Xiao Qin, develops a practice in which Chinese calligraphy and surfaces dominated by white are part of a conception of art as a means of transcending human limits in relation to the infinite. He dies in 2023.
A Spanish government scholarship enables him to travel to Madrid in 1956–1957. The San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts then seems too conservative to him. He settles in Milan in 1959. From 1967 to 1972, he lives in the United States and teaches painting and drawing, notably at Southampton College of Long Island University in New York, and then at the University of Baton Rouge in Louisiana. In 1973, he returns to live in Milan.
Within Punto, art is conceived as a way of transcending human limits, in relation to the infinite. Chinese calligraphy and the predominance of white on certain surfaces are among the artistic means associated with this pursuit.
The retrospective presented at the Kaohsiung Museum in 2010 and the solo exhibition listed at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain de la Ville de Liège in 2011 attest to the presentation of his work at institutions in Taiwan and Belgium. The list of his solo exhibitions also mentions the Marconi Foundation and the Milan Triennale in 2009, as well as the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in 2006. Works by Hsiao Chin are recorded in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne.
This profile brings together identity references for Hsiao Chin and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
