Vincenzo Giacomelli

Born : 1814Died : 1890

Vincenzo Giacomelli (1814–1890) developed a narrative painting practice encompassing mythology, civic history and the events of the Risorgimento. Diomede fugge nascondendo il Palladio, an oil painting dated 1839 at Venice’s Gallerie dell’Accademia, documents his engagement with ancient subjects. In Trieste, he collaborated with the stage designer Giuseppe Bertoja on the Teatro Grande curtain, inaugurated in 1846. Its scene represents the transfer of episcopal governing rights to the municipal authorities.

La battaglia di San Martino il 24 giugno 1859, painted in 1861 and held by Milan’s Museum of the Risorgimento, gives this narrative approach monumental scale. Victor Emmanuel II appears on horseback amid troops advancing through a storm. These works connect collective action with prominent individuals, presenting formative historical episodes within public and museum settings.

This profile brings together identity references for Vincenzo Giacomelli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
