Joseph Zaritsky (1891–1985), an Israeli painter born in Ukraine, studied in Kyiv before settling in Mandate Palestine in 1923. His watercolours of Safed, Tiberias and Jerusalem during the 1920s use landscape as the starting point for an approach that moves towards abstraction. In 1948 he helped establish New Horizons, a group promoting modern Israeli art.
Tamarisk and Figures in Tel Aviv, about 1930, in the Jewish Museum, New York, combines watercolour and pencil on paper. Zichron Ya’akov, painted in 1939 and held by the High Museum, also exemplifies his practice of landscape watercolour. In 1955 the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presented his work alongside that of Indonesian painter Rusli, in separate solo exhibitions brought together by Willem Sandberg within the programme 5 generaties.
