Hendrik Goltzius, often called Hendrick, was an engraver, draftsman, print publisher and painter active in Haarlem. In the late sixteenth century, his Mannerist engravings reached an international audience. His workshop contributed to their circulation by producing prints after his designs and in a graphic manner closely associated with his own.
Precision of line also informed his experiments with the pen. Some works on canvas imitate the appearance of engraving while remaining entirely drawn by hand. His Italian journey of 1590–1591 renewed his approach to the body and to antique models. Around 1600, he also developed a painting practice, particularly in mythological subjects. Teylers Museum preserves many of his drawings, in which studies of the nude and representations of landscape occupy an important place.
This profile brings together identity references for Hendrik Goltzius and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
