Andries Bosman, also known as André Bosmans, was a seventeenth-century Flemish painter and priest. After a brief registration with Antwerp’s Guild of Saint Luke, he chose an ecclesiastical career. He became chaplain to the bishop of Ghent in 1641 and a canon of Saint James’s church in Antwerp in 1657, before departing for Rome from 1664.
His flower painting is close to that of Daniel Seghers, and their works have sometimes been confused. An oil on copper signed and dated Brussels 1654 shows Saint Anne offering grapes to Mary and the Child: the grisaille scene occupies a cartouche surrounded by floral garlands. The Prado also holds a floral composition by Bosman featuring Saint Anne, the Virgin and Child, likewise painted in Brussels.
This profile brings together identity references for Andries Bosman and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
