Adolph von Menzel (1815–1905) began his career in printmaking within his family’s lithographic business. Based in Berlin, he became an exceptionally precise draughtsman, attentive to gestures, faces and objects. Illustrations and paintings devoted to Frederick the Great established his reputation, supported by extensive research into historical costumes and accessories.
His work also includes interiors, urban scenes and depictions of modern labour. The Iron Rolling Mill, painted between 1872 and 1875, describes industrial activity through a dense composition and complex lighting effects. Visits to Paris brought encounters with Degas and Meissonier. Ennobled in 1898, Menzel maintained an intensive drawing practice throughout his life, essential to his observation of the contemporary world and connecting the different areas of his art.
This profile brings together identity references for Adolph von Menzel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
