Yves Tanguy (1900–1955), born in Paris and deceased in Woodbury, Connecticut, was a self-taught painter associated with Surrealism. After travels in the merchant marine and military service, he discovered Giorgio de Chirico's work in 1923, inspiring him to paint. André Breton welcomed him into the Surrealist group in 1925; his first solo exhibition followed in 1927. In 1939 he travelled to the United States with Kay Sage, whom he married the following year.
His imaginary landscapes place mineral or organic forms within vast, indeterminate spaces. Meticulous execution, precise shadows and distant horizons lend tangible presence to these enigmatic elements. During his American period, colours became bolder and volumes more monumental. His work thus constructs a coherent dream world between geological suggestion and exploration of the unconscious.
