Marcel Dzama, born in Winnipeg in 1974, was a founding member of The Royal Art Lodge, a collective in which drawing developed as a shared practice. After moving to New York in 2004, he also worked with sculpture, film and installation. Masked characters, animals and fantastic figures populate scenes drawing on fairy tales, comics and military history, where playfulness coexists with unease.
An Untitled drawing of 2000 at MoMA combines ink, watercolour and root beer concentrate on paper, demonstrating his use of unconventional materials. With Ghosts of Canoe Lake, presented at the McMichael in 2023–2024, he returned to the landscapes of Manitoba and Saskatchewan and the imaginative world surrounding Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven. Paintings, installation and video give these memories several complementary forms.
This profile brings together identity references for Marcel Dzama and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
