Born in Viña del Mar in 1967, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra is a Chilean artist who has lived in Germany since 1995. Drawing occupies a central place in her work. Human figures, often women, encounter animal and plant forms in images concerned with the body, desire, fear and freedom. Personal experiences intertwine with stories and symbols drawn from different cultures, giving these encounters both intimate and collective dimensions.
She dips some drawings in wax, which gives their surfaces depth and strengthens the paper. Folded like an accordion or assembled together, sheets can become objects in space. MoMA holds works including Elemental, dated 2008, and Warrior, from 2009. The Käthe Kollwitz Prize, awarded in 2023, recognised a practice connecting drawing, sculpture and installation.
