Hubert Sattler (1817–1904) developed his landscape painting through extensive travel. Trained by his father Johann Michael Sattler and at the Vienna Academy, he travelled across Europe, the Near East and the Americas. Back in Austria, he composed paintings using sketches made on location and prints. His views of New York and Mexico City, dated 1854, demonstrate the geographical range of his subjects. He also painted the Stelvio Pass, Venice and Swiss sites including Chillon Castle. His works may bear various pseudonyms, notably Louis Ritchard or Stähly-Rychen. The Salzburg Museum presents his paintings in a cosmorama, continuing the exploration of distant landscapes through images.
