Horacio Garcia Rossi (1929–2012), born in Buenos Aires, studied at his city’s fine arts school before settling in Paris in 1959. Within GRAV, he worked with Julio Le Parc, François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Joël Stein and Yvaral. The group presented its collective Labyrinthe at the Paris Biennale in 1963.
Garcia Rossi explored actual movement, light and spectator participation. From 1962, his unstable light boxes used concealed mechanisms to make forms and colours appear and disappear. He also experimented with objects that viewers could manipulate and with moving alphabets. After returning to two-dimensional investigations in the early 1970s, he concentrated his painting on colour-light, constructing it through white lines, pure colours and gradations that lead progressively into darkness.
This profile brings together identity references for Horacio Garcia Rossi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
