Paul Augustin Aïzpiri (1919–2016), a French painter and lithographer born and deceased in Paris, first trained at the École Boulle, then at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, where he was admitted to Fernand Sabatté’s studio in 1936. Taken prisoner during the Second World War, he escaped and lived underground during the Occupation. He exhibited at the Salon d’automne shortly after the Liberation, with documented participations in 1945 and 1946, then from 1947 to 1951. In 1951, he received the third prize at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture and was featured at the Venice Biennale, where he was also present in 1952. On 9 March 1953, he was a member of the founding committee of the association known as the Association de la Jeune Peinture.

Yvon Taillandier describes a style of painting in which contours construct volume rather than modelling it. He also notes the removal of atmospheric perspective, liberties taken with linear perspective, and particular attention to surface effects—elements that, in his view, create a “warm, confined and unreal” atmosphere. Book illustration has a documented place in his work. In 1957, Aïzpiri produced twenty-five original lithographs for Shakespeare’s La Sauvage apprivoisée, in François Victor-Hugo’s translation. In 1960, he illustrated Jean de Gerson’s La Passion de Notre Seigneur with a watercolour, a drawing and thirty-two lithographs; that same year, he produced a frontispiece and twenty-three lithographs for Corneille’s Le Cid. A book by Raymond Cogniat about the artist was published in 1963 by the Éditions de la Galerie Romanet, with an original lithograph.

His solo exhibitions include Galerie Parvillée in Paris in 1943, Musée de l’Athénée in Geneva in 1952, Galerie Wildenstein in New York in 1956 and Galerie Ohana in London in 1959. A retrospective was devoted to him at Espace Cardin in Paris in 1990. His prints were shown at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 1992 in De Bonnard à Baselitz, an exhibition devoted to ten years of additions to the Prints Department. He was also included in Années 50 – L’alternative figurative at the musée d’Art Roger-Quilliot in 2007, and then in La Jeune Peinture, presented at the Musée Henri-Martin in Gray in 2017. According to the source, his works are on permanent display at the Nakata Museum in Onomichi.
