Hermann Schnee (1840–1926) was a German landscape painter born in Treuenbrietzen. Raised around the parks of Potsdam, he received encouragement from the writer Theodor Storm, a family friend. He trained with Oswald Achenbach in Düsseldorf and followed Hans Gude to Karlsruhe in 1863. From 1868 he lived in Berlin, pursuing a career as painter and teacher, including work in a studio that accepted women students.
His travels took him to the Harz, Thuringia and Switzerland. Watermills, old houses, gardens, ruins and woodland scenes recur in his pictures, which belong to a tradition of atmospheric Romantic landscape painting. Oils, watercolours and etchings offered different means of exploring these subjects. Potsdam remained important throughout his life, through memories of Sanssouci and extensive family connections to its parks and architecture.
