Born in Beirut in 1931, Huguette Caland studied at the city’s American University before moving to Paris in 1970. Her practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture and textiles. In Bribes de corps, a series developed during the 1970s, she explores the female body through abstract forms, questioning conventions of representation and the standards of beauty associated with them.
Visages, a 1979 oil painting in the Museum of Modern Art, brings delicate lines together with broad expanses of colour: bodily contours become a sensuous map. Her work also extends to clothing, notably a collection of caftans designed with Pierre Cardin in 1979. Caland settled in Venice, California, in 1987, returned to Beirut in 2013 and died there in 2019.
This profile brings together identity references for Huguette Caland and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
