Friedrich Paul Nerly, also known as Federico Paolo Nerly, was born in Venice in 1842 and died in Lucerne. The son of landscape painter Friedrich von Nerly, he first studied with his father before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. His career developed in Italy, particularly in Rome, where he worked as a painter.
His subjects moved from Venetian surroundings towards southern Italian landscapes, and his practice favoured study from nature. Bragozzi veneziani evokes the boats of the lagoon, while other compositions turn towards the Italian coastline. His name is also associated with preserving his father’s work: his donation to Erfurt in 1883 helped establish the municipal museum opened in 1886, now the Angermuseum. This act gave the family’s artistic inheritance a public home.
This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Nerly and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
