Chaïm Soutine, also known as Khaïm Solomonovitch Sutin, is a Belarusian painter who emigrated to France. In 1907, in Minsk, he attended drawing classes with Michel Kikoïne under M. Kreuger. Admitted to the École des beaux-arts de Vilnius in 1910, he studied there, according to Kikoïne’s testimony. He left Vilnius for Paris with Kikoïne, after Pinchus Krémègne’s departure. In Paris, he was enrolled at the Cormon studio. His output was prolific, but his exacting standards led him to destroy many of his works. He died in Paris on 9 August 1943.
