Sawat Tantisuk

Born : 1925Died : 2009Documented citizenships : Thailand

Sawat Tantisuk (1925–2009), also known as Sawasdi Tantisuk, was a Thai painter born in Thonburi. He studied at Silpakorn University and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. This training placed him among the artists who helped develop modern painting in Thailand, bringing observation of their surroundings into contact with European approaches to painting. He was designated a National Artist in the field of painting in 1991.

His landscapes and scenes of everyday life explore colour, surface and the rhythm of painted marks. Natural forms can become compositions approaching abstraction without entirely losing contact with their initial subjects. In Trees, for example, the tree is transformed into an arrangement of expressive marks. His work thus contributed to expanding the possibilities of representation within modern Thai painting.

This profile brings together identity references for Sawat Tantisuk and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
