Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010), born in Paris, was a French-American artist whose work explores memory, the body and family relationships. Raised in a family of tapestry restorers, she studied art in Paris, notably with Fernand Léger. In 1938, following her marriage to art historian Robert Goldwater, she moved to New York. Drawing and printmaking remained enduring companions to her sculpture.
Across her career she used wood, plaster, bronze, marble, latex and textiles. Her Cells bring objects and sculptures together within enclosed spaces that evoke psychological situations. Monumental spiders refer particularly to the maternal figure and weaving. The retrospective organised at the Museum of Modern Art in 1982 marked a major stage in her international recognition.
This profile brings together identity references for Louise Bourgeois and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
