Ernst Willers (1803–1880) was a German painter who specialised in landscape. A pupil of Ernst Pose in Düsseldorf and a friend of Schirmer, he continued his training with Johan Christian Dahl in Dresden in 1824. This encounter introduced him to direct observation of nature and outdoor oil studies, while the classical tradition of southern landscape remained important to his work.
In 1843 he travelled to Greece at the request of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August of Oldenburg. A commission for Greek landscapes for Oldenburg Castle prompted a second journey, from 1857 to 1859, with Louis Gurlitt. His Landschaftsstudie aus Griechenland, an oil on paper mounted on panel, represents this aspect of his production. A view of Athens is also recorded in Munich’s Schack Gallery.
This profile brings together identity references for Ernst Willers and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
