Ralph Hotere (1931–2013), also known as Hone Papita Raukura Hotere, was a Māori artist from New Zealand affiliated with Te Aupōuri. A painter and draughtsman, he also developed sculptures and installations. His Māori heritage and Catholic upbringing informed work open to abstraction and poetry. Black, crosses, circles and words recur throughout his visual language, connecting formal investigation with cultural experience.
Hotere used ordinary and industrial materials, exploring their surfaces, responses to light and capacity for transformation. Collaborations with Bill Culbert brought together objects, structures and illumination. Works such as Black Phoenix give burnt materials an intense physical presence. Without prescribing a single interpretation, his practice frequently protested against war, injustice and damage to the environment, maintaining close connections between artistic decisions and a wider social awareness.
