Erich Heckel

Born : 1883Died : 1970Documented citizenships : Germany

Erich Heckel, a German artist born in Döbeln in 1883 and died in Radolfzell in 1970, was one of the founders of Die Brücke, a group formed in Dresden in 1905 with Fritz Bleyl and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. After studying in Chemnitz, where he met Schmidt-Rottluff in 1901, he studied architecture in Dresden; within Die Brücke, he served as secretary and treasurer. He initially devoted himself to lithography and etching. The source describes his paintings from before 1910 as highly coloured and Fauvist in inspiration, in relation to his practice of these techniques.

In 1912, Heckel met Franz Marc and exhibited with the painters of Der Blaue Reiter; he also took part in the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne. Die Brücke was dissolved on 27 May 1913. During the war, he served as a volunteer medical orderly in Flanders. The source reports that he met Max Beckmann there and became friends with Ensor.

Several works dating from 1907 to 1913 are associated in the source with museum collections: The Brickworks (1907) at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Red Houses (1908) at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Windmill near Dangast (1909) at the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, and Dresden Landscape (1910) at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Landscape in Holstein, an oil on canvas from 1913 measuring 82 × 95 cm, is stated to be held at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. From 1949 to 1955, Heckel taught at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts; he was also a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.

His graphic work is the subject of a volume in Graphik der Gegenwart, edited by Ernst Rathenau and published in Berlin in 1931. In 1965, Paul Vogt published a catalogue raisonné of the paintings with Bongers in Recklinghausen.
