Gustav Schönleber chose painting after an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and a brief period at Stuttgart’s Polytechnic. He studied in Munich under Adolf Lier from 1870 to 1873. Barbizon outdoor painting, the study of Dutch landscapes and observation of nature shaped his development. He taught landscape painting in Karlsruhe from 1880 to 1913, with Friedrich Kallmorgen and Gustav Kampmann among his pupils.
Study journeys took him to Italy, southern France and the Netherlands. Venetian Houses beside a Canal, dated 1871, is a small oil study on canvas mounted on cardboard. View of Laufenburg on the Rhine with the Rapids, painted in 1908, instead occupies a large canvas measuring 132 by 191 centimetres. Both works belong to the collection of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.
