జాన్ సింగర్ సార్జెంట్

Born : 1856Died : 1925Documented citizenships : United States

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), an American painter born in Florence, grew up in a family that travelled through Europe. Following initial artistic training in Florence, he entered Carolus-Duran's Paris studio in 1874. His teacher encouraged direct painting and study of the old masters, particularly Velázquez. Madame X caused controversy at the Salon of 1884; Sargent settled in England in 1886.

He became a sought-after portraitist, although his work extends well beyond fashionable commissions. His travels inspired watercolours and paintings of Venice, the Alps and the Mediterranean world, exploring reflections and changing light. He also produced murals for institutions in Boston and Cambridge. Broad, responsive brushwork connects his formal portraits with the more freely handled studies on paper that occupied an important place throughout his artistic career.

This profile brings together identity references for జాన్ సింగర్ సార్జెంట్ and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
