Woldemar Hottenroth (1802–1894), born in Blasewitz near Dresden, trained at the city’s academy under Johann Friedrich Matthaei and Ferdinand Hartmann. A scholarship enabled him to travel to Paris in 1828. After visiting Switzerland with his brother Edmund, also a painter, he went to Rome in 1830 and joined the German artistic community there.
His career continued in Hamburg and again in Rome before he settled in Dresden in 1854 and later in Wachwitz. Although Hottenroth painted historical and religious subjects, his portraits and genre scenes, particularly those inspired by the Roman Campagna, hold a central place in his work. Their visual language links Romantic traditions with the emerging realism of the Biedermeier period. His Annunciation of 1843 for the Catholic church in Nyon also records his connections with Switzerland.
This profile brings together identity references for Woldemar Hottenroth and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
