Paul Müller-Kaempff

The German painter and lithographer Paul Müller-Kaempff (1861–1941) developed a practice extending from painting to several other techniques and disciplines. After studying at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, he trained in Karlsruhe with Gustav Schönleber from 1883 to 1886, then in Berlin with Hans Fredrik Gude from 1886 to 1888. In 1889, during a trip to Fischland-Darss-Zingst with the painter Oskar Frenzel, he discovered Ahrenshoop, a fishing village.

He had a house built there in 1892 and opened a painting school in 1894. In 1904, he founded another painting school in Oldenburg with Else Schwager, his former pupil, who would become his wife. In May and June 1908, he visited Georg Müller vom Siel and his colony in Dötlingen.

His work includes paintings, watercolours, pastels, drawings and lithographs; he also designed furniture, postcards and book illustrations. Museums in Rostock, Oldenburg, Kiel and Hamburg acquired his works. The work “Katen hinter Birken”, described as an oil on canvas measuring 50 × 70 cm and signed at the lower left, will be entered under number G 1057 in the supplement to the artist’s catalogue raisonné.
