Maurice Delcourt (1877–1916), born in Paris, belonged to the generation that renewed printmaking and illustration at the end of the nineteenth century. While still young he contributed to L’Ymagier, the journal of Remy de Gourmont and Alfred Jarry, subsequently working for other literary and artistic publications. He illustrated texts by Jean de Tinan and Camille Mauclair, linking his drawing practice closely with books.
Woodcut occupied a central place in his work, alongside lithography. Studio scenes, portraits and familiar subjects explore the expressive possibilities of line and flat areas. L’Atelier de composition typographique, dating from around 1895, demonstrates his interest in printing trades. He also introduced Raoul Dufy to older printmaking traditions. Mobilised during the First World War, Delcourt died at Chattancourt in 1916.
This profile brings together identity references for Maurice Delcourt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
