Hans von Aachen, born in Cologne in 1552 and deceased in Prague in 1615, was a German painter and draughtsman. After training in Cologne and travelling in Italy, he worked in Bavaria before settling in Prague in 1596. In Rudolf II's service he also acted as an adviser on art acquisitions. His practice embraced portraits, history painting and genre scenes.
Cephalus Kills Procris, a drawing at the Städel made in Venice in 1585, illustrates a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses using pen, wash and chalk. In the Kunsthistorisches Museum's Procuress Scene, around 1605–1610, amorous dealings acquire a moral dimension: a watch pays for the transaction while a fool displays an hourglass. Mythological narrative and the observation of human behaviour thus provide two registers of his work, both developed through relationships between figures.
This profile brings together identity references for Hans von Aachen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
