Gisbert Flüggen (1811–1859) was a German painter born in Cologne. Trained in Düsseldorf, he settled in Munich during the 1830s and specialised in genre painting. His compositions frequently depict interiors and members of affluent society, sometimes dressed in eighteenth-century costume. The example of the Scottish painter David Wilkie encouraged his interest in narrative situations and the different reactions of individuals within a shared scene.
Games, legal decisions, inheritances and family events provided subjects for pictures arranged like small dramatic episodes. Expression, costume and relationships between figures make their action intelligible. Flüggen also paid close attention to colour and the atmosphere of interiors. His work belongs to the development of Munich genre painting, in which observation of human behaviour combines with a pronounced taste for visual storytelling.
