Giovan Battista Langetti belonged to the tenebrosi working in seventeenth-century Venice. Originally from Genoa, he was present in the lagoon city during the 1650s and attracted Marco Boschini’s attention by 1660. His painting combines forceful contrasts of light and shade with strongly individualised bodies, bringing together elements associated with Caravaggio, Ribera and Tintoretto.
The Vision of Saint Jerome, painted around 1660 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, gives this intensity a striking form. An angel sounds a trumpet while the saint covers his ears; dramatic lighting reinforces the figures’ physical presence. Isaac Blesses Jacob, in the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu, presents another biblical episode from Langetti’s work in the second half of the century.
This profile brings together identity references for Giovan Battista Langetti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
