Born in Herford in 1807, Heinrich Funk grew up in a family already connected with painting: his father, also named Heinrich, gave private drawing lessons. In 1829 he entered the Düsseldorf academy, studying landscape under Carl Friedrich Lessing and Wilhelm Schirmer. Landscape remained the central discipline of a career that took him to Frankfurt in 1836 and subsequently to Stuttgart. There, in 1854, he succeeded Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf as professor of landscape painting at the academy. His professional life thus combined making art with teaching a discipline centred on the representation of nature. He retired for health reasons in 1876 and died in Stuttgart the following year, after more than two decades of academic teaching in the city.
