Fritz Köthe
Born : 1916Died : 2005Documented citizenships : Germany
Born in Berlin in 1916, Fritz Köthe died there in 2005. He trained in graphic arts in Berlin and Leipzig. After years working in advertising and window display, he transformed this professional imagery into material for painting. His pictures reassemble fragments of advertisements with realist precision, making entirely painted surfaces resemble collages. Bodies, technical objects and commercial signs meet in combinations that can acquire a surreal character. Although associated with the development of German Pop Art, Köthe remained reluctant to accept that label and stressed his identity as a careful painter. Everyday imagery thus becomes a field for observation, fragmentation and rearrangement, with meaning emerging from the encounter between familiar visual elements.
This profile brings together identity references for Fritz Köthe and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
