Sophus Hansen

Born : 1871Died : 1959Documented citizenships : Germany

The German painter and lithographer Ernst Friedrich Sophus Hansen was born in Glücksburg in 1871 and died there in 1959; his career developed between Weimar, Hamburg and, once again, his native town. From 1889, he studied at the Weimar art school under Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth and Max Thedy. The biographical entry lists him as a member of the Weimar artists’ association from 1890 and notes the influence of Christian Rohlfs. A stay in Giverny, where he visited Claude Monet, coincided with a brief turn towards Impressionism and Pointillism.

After returning to Weimar in 1896, Hansen worked as an independent artist. In 1900, he settled in Hamburg and joined the Hamburgischer Künstlerclub von 1897, formed around Alfred Lichtwark. He took part in exhibitions at the Hamburger Kunstverein and the Glaspalast in Munich; the entry also lists him as a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Künstlergenossenschaft and the Hamburger Künstlerverein von 1832. His later activity is associated with Hamburg-Hamm, then Blankenese and Rissen, before he settled in Glücksburg from 1930. The works cited in sale records span several decades: Dorfstrasse Oberweimar is signed and dated 1912, and Mädchen mit Katze 1916; Idyll, also identified by the English title “Cupid is instructed”, is a signed oil on canvas dated 1926. Sommer am See, an oil on hardboard, bears the signature and date 1933.

This profile brings together identity references for Sophus Hansen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
