Friedrich von Olivier (1791–1859), born and deceased in Dessau, was a German painter and draughtsman associated with the Nazarenes and the Brotherhood of Saint Luke. Ferdinand Olivier's brother, he belonged to the circle of Peter Cornelius, Friedrich Overbeck and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. His subjects include landscape, portraiture and historical or religious narratives, developed within an artistic milieu strongly engaged with Italy.
A view of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Rome, held by the Städel Museum, combines pencil and watercolour in an architectural study. The museum credits The Good Samaritan of 1833 jointly to Schnorr von Carolsfeld and the two Olivier brothers. Fighting Horsemen, an 1818 watercolour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, represents another aspect of his work on paper, centred on action and moving figures.
This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich von Olivier and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
