Christo (1935–2020), born in Bulgaria, studied at Sofia’s Academy of Fine Arts before settling in Paris in 1958. There he met Jeanne-Claude, with whom he would develop large-scale interventions. His early experiments included objects wrapped in cloth or plastic; wrapping subsequently became a means of temporarily transforming the perception of a monument. Based in New York from 1964, Christo and Jeanne-Claude realised projects including the wrapped Pont-Neuf in Paris in 1985 and the wrapped Reichstag in Berlin in 1995. The Gates occupied Central Park in February 2005. Preparatory drawings and collages accompanied these projects, including Running Fence. Christo also conceived Big Air Package, presented inside Oberhausen’s Gasometer in 2013 and realised without Jeanne-Claude.
This profile brings together identity references for Christo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
