Fred Sandback’s sculptures take shape through the arrangement of taut threads: between walls, corners, floor and ceiling, they delineate geometric figures and create virtual planes or volumes. Born in Bronxville, New York State, in 1943, the artist died in New York in 2003; the Art Institute of Chicago also gives his name as Frederick Lane Sandback. He studied at Yale University from 1962 to 1966, then at the Yale School of Art and Architecture from 1966 to 1969.
His first works, made in 1968 and 1969, combine industrially painted metal rods, often supplemented by elastic cord. At the same time, his drawings systematically explore the possible combinations of his formal vocabulary. The Art Institute of Chicago lists, among others, two works from 1969 entitled Untitled (No. 125 from 133 proposals for Heiner Friedrich Gallery) and Untitled (No. 53 from 133 proposals for Heiner Friedrich Gallery).
Sandback began exhibiting his work in group exhibitions in 1967 and took part in When Attitudes Become Form in Bern in 1969. His first solo exhibitions were held from 1968 onwards, first in Germany, then in Switzerland, Italy, France and the United States. In 1986, the Kunsthalle Mannheim devoted his first European retrospective to him.
Galerie Mitterrand notes a permanent installation at the Dia Art Foundation since 1992, as well as presentations at the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in 2005, the Whitechapel Gallery in 2011 and the Glenstone Museum in 2018. According to the same gallery, his works are held in public collections such as those of MoMA and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
