The Dutch painter Adriaen van der Werff was born in Kralingen on 21 January 1659 and died in Rotterdam on 12 November 1722. In 1676, he became an independent master in Rotterdam and produced small portraits and genre scenes. His work, most often small in format, also includes historical scenes, scenes of private life and portraits. His compositions give prominence to elegant costumes and richly furnished interiors, sometimes embellished with classical sculptures.
His marriage in 1687 gave him access to the collections and prints of Nicolaes Anthonis Flick, his wife’s guardian. This exposure deepened his knowledge of classical art, the Renaissance, and the French and Italian Baroque. Self-Portrait with the Portrait of His Wife Margaretha van Rees and His Daughter Maria, dated 1699, is an oil painting on canvas held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Wallace Collection in London holds Shepherds and Shepherdesses, an oil painting on canvas from 1696; the Uffizi in Florence holds The Adoration of the Shepherds, painted in oil on wood in 1703. His brother Pieter van der Werff is described as his principal pupil and assistant.
