Franz M. Jansen, a German painter and graphic artist, was born in Cologne on 4 February 1885. He is associated with Rhenish Expressionism, an artistic movement of the 1910s. Sources also refer to him as Franz Maria Jansen and F. M. Jansen. From 1912, he was a member of the Berlin Secession. He shared his life with the painter Fifi Kreutzer, who was also involved in Rhenish Expressionism.
Etching, woodcut and linocut form the principal focus of his practice, while he also explored oil painting. Works cited include Gemüsegarten (1911), Weggabelung im Wald (1913-14), Promenade (1925) and Masken (1925).
According to Poetica Art, 157 of his works were confiscated under the National Socialist regime, as they were considered to belong to «degenerate art». His paintings are recorded in public and private collections, notably in Düsseldorf.
His graphic work is the subject of the catalogue Franz M. Jansen. Das Graphische Werk 1910–1956, compiled by Ulrike Merholz and published in Düsseldorf in 1994. His memoirs, Von damals bis heute. Lebenserinnerungen, edited by Magdalena Moeller, were published in Cologne in 1981.
