Franz Innocenz Josef Kobell

Franz Kobell (1749–1822) devoted himself to drawing and landscape with encouragement from his brother Ferdinand. A pension from Elector Karl Theodor enabled him to travel to Italy in 1778. There he drew architecture and explored the Roman Campagna, before settling in Munich following his return in 1784.

The Isar with Boulders on the Isarhohe (1809), at the National Gallery of Art, combines pen, brown ink and brown wash over traces of graphite. The laid paper thus receives several ways of constructing a landscape. In Headland Landscape, about 1810, at the Städel Museum, a grey-brown brush instead works on bluish laid paper. Its small format, 15.3 by 20.3 centimetres, concentrates this study within an intimate surface.

This profile brings together identity references for Franz Innocenz Josef Kobell and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
