Anton Doll (1826–1887) was a German painter associated with the Munich school. Encouraged as a young man by the portraitist and lithographer Franz Dahmen, he abandoned legal studies to devote himself to painting. He joined the Munich Kunstverein in 1852. His travels took him to the Salzburg region, Switzerland and northern Italy, although his native city and the Bavarian countryside remained central to his repertoire.
Doll combined landscape with scenes of rural life. Agricultural work, journeys and leisure activities animate compositions structured by villages and mountains. Winter views are particularly characteristic subjects. Harvest in Maxglan, near Salzburg, dating from around 1850, exemplifies his interest in peasant activities. His views of Munich extend this attention to the relationship between places and their inhabitants.
