Francesco Nenci, a native of Anghiari who died in Siena in 1850, was a Tuscan painter and illustrator working in the Neoclassical tradition. Following initial training with Tommaso Maria Conca, he entered the Florence Academy in 1797. There he studied with Pietro Pedroni and Pietro Benvenuti, among others, before receiving a study residency in Rome in 1811.
His historical, mythological and religious compositions accompanied an extensive illustration practice, notably for the Divine Comedy and Italian literary classics. Appointed director of Siena’s art institute in 1827, he held the position until his death. He also contributed to heritage protection and the expansion of local collections. His decorative paintings include Ulysses at the Court of Alcinous, executed between 1833 and 1835 in Florence’s Palazzo Pitti.
