Helmuth Macke (1891–1936), born in Krefeld, began studying with Johan Thorn Prikker in 1906. A cousin of August Macke, he nevertheless developed an independent position within Rhenish Expressionism. Visits to Munich and Berlin brought him into contact with Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky and artists associated with Die Brücke. Colour, valued for its decorative and expressive power, shaped his early compositions.
The First World War interrupted this development. Despite being wounded, he continued to depict landscapes, military locations and soldiers in drawings and watercolours. After 1919 he worked in Krefeld and then Bonn. His painting gradually became calmer, combining less rigid contours with a more restrained palette. A Rome scholarship enabled a stay in Italy. In 1933 he moved to Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance, where he later died in a boating accident.
This profile brings together identity references for Гельмут Маке and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
