Angelo Caroselli worked chiefly in Rome as a painter, copyist and restorer. A member of the Accademia di San Luca, he developed a manner responsive to the naturalism associated with Caravaggio. Research into his career also documents a stay in Naples and commissions for the Vittrice Chapel in Santa Maria in Vallicella, where he worked on prophets and a Pietà in 1611–1612.
His Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, held by the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, dates from the 1620s. The saint’s aged body and dirty feet give the sacred figure an emphatically physical presence, reinforced by the close framing. The same museum preserves a Madonna and Child with Saint Lawrence and Saint Stephen, another example of the religious paintings Caroselli produced during that decade.
This profile brings together identity references for Angelo Caroselli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
