Georg Meistermann (1911–1990), a German painter and draughtsman born in Solingen and who died in Cologne, studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1930 under Werner Heuser, Heinrich Nauen and Ewald Mataré. In 1933, the Nazi condemnation of this type of art prevented him from continuing his studies. He then worked for several years as a freelance painter and art teacher in Solingen.
The production of stained glass, which he began in 1937, is a documented aspect of his practice. A stained-glass window was installed in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin in 1957; in 1976, he designed four windows for the Collegio Teutonico in Rome. He also created a new decorative scheme for the Basilica of St Gereon in Cologne between 1979 and 1986.
Meistermann took part in documenta 1 in 1955 and documenta 2 in 1959, in Kassel. A work by the artist was presented at Galerie Heimeshoff in Essen in 1989, in the exhibition “Georg Meistermann – neue Arbeiten”, and later featured in the touring exhibition organised for the centenary of his birth, shown in Solingen, Bayreuth and Linnich in 2011–2012. It is described as a pendant executed later to “Blätter 2 (Blätter)”, listed as Herold 743. The Georg-Meistermann Museum was inaugurated in Wittlich in 1994.
This profile brings together identity references for Georg Meistermann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
