Ferdinand Knab brought architecture and landscape together in compositions shaped by Romantic sensibilities. Training with Carl Alexander Heideloff in Nuremberg first gave him an architectural grounding. In Munich, where he arrived in 1859, he continued his education with Ramberg, Kirchner and Piloty. A stay in Italy deepened his interest in monuments and surviving fragments of buildings. Ruins, monastery courtyards and Roman landscapes became recurring motifs, while watercolour complemented his painting. This taste for evocative architecture also found a decorative application: as court painter to Ludwig II of Bavaria, he worked for the winter garden of the Munich Residenz and for Linderhof. His work thus links the study of buildings to their reinvention within landscape or palace settings.
This profile brings together identity references for Ferdinand Knab and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
