Fateh Moudarres, born in Aleppo in 1922, developed his painting through studies in Syria, Rome and Paris. These stages connected his education to exchanges between the Middle East and Europe, subsequently extended by exhibitions in several international cities. His compositions feature small, upright figures whose heads can be as wide as their shoulders. Warm colours and traditional Arab motifs give these figures a distinctive presence. From the war of 1975 onwards, the surrealist character of his work took on a more engaged tone. Without abandoning the human figure, Moudarres constructed a pictorial world in which formal vocabulary and historical concerns met. He continued painting until the end of his life, dying in Damascus in 1999.
This profile brings together identity references for Fateh Moudarres and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
